According to the NBA, led by Joe Dumars, the league has decided to suspend Joel Embiid for three games for getting into an altercation with a Philadelphia 76ers columnist.
The reason why Embiid snapped the way he did was due to Marcus Hayes bringing up Embiid’s dead family member and son in an article concerning his availability and injury status.
This incident occurred Saturday night after Philly’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Before getting suspended, Embiid was going to play in Wednesday’s game. However, the 30-year-old will play as soon as he’s done serving his suspension.
Per reports, Embiid’s suspension begins Wednesday. Philadelphia takes on the Los Angeles Clippers.
“Mutual respect is paramount to the relationship between players and media in the NBA,” Joe Dumars said. “While we understand Joel was offended by the personal nature of the original version of the reporter’s column, interactions must remain professional on both sides and can never turn physical.”
ESPN’s Bobby Marks says that this latest suspension will cost Embiid a little over a million dollars.
