Doc Rivers Questioned The Adrian Griffin Firing

The Bucks fired Adrian Griffin, who led them to a 30-13 record, to hire Doc Rivers. In Rivers’ words, he was shocked by Milwaukee firing Griffin for him. But how could he turn down the opportunity to coach Giannis Antetokoumpo and Damian Lillard?

Speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Rivers said he brought these concerns to the Bucks when hiring him.

“Personally, I’ll be honest, I told ownership when they called, ‘I don’t understand why you’re doing this,’” said Rivers of the team parting ways with Griffin.

“One of the things they said was, ‘Well it doesn’t matter, we’ve done it now, and we want you,’” explained Rivers. “And so that was a tough one, that’s where the hesitation…”

Milwaukee feels that bringing in Rivers will wield them to the championship; they weren’t confident in Griffin’s abilities. Players have also vouched for Rivers to be their head coach. It should be noted the Bucks are 3-7 under Rivers.

Doc Rivers On Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Injury: ‘I’m Not Sure’

Before getting on a plane to fly to Indiana, the Milwaukee Bucks held practice on Thursday. The most notable headliner from practice was not seeing Giannis Antetokounmpo do any contact or live practicing, but there is some good news attached.

As Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported, the 29-year-old was doing walk-through drills by “shooting and moving.” This is a very positive note for the Bucks, who are heading into Game 3 tied at one apiece.

Doc Rivers did provide an update regarding the health and a possible return; however, it was extremely vague and swayed between pessimistic and optimistic.

“He’s getting close,” Rivers said. “But, I don’t know what that even means. I’m being honest. I saw him moving around and in my mind I said he’s getting close. Does that mean a day, four days? I’m not sure.”

Game 3 is Friday at 5:00 PM EST. The Bucks are listing him as doubtful for tomorrow’s contest.

Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst has great confidence in Doc Rivers, so the team fired Adrian Griffin. The franchise hopes they can go all-in and win another ring; Rivers has an interesting answer when asked about winning a championship.

“It’s funny — my friends at least, they’re like, ‘How you doing?'” Rivers said, putting on a concerned voice before breaking into a smile.

“And I’m like, ‘I’m great. I’m happy. I love this team. The organization is solid, man, and we got a chance. Could we win a title today? I don’t know. But when it’s time, I think that answer will be yes.”

Rivers has great confidence in his team and hopes they can become unstoppable when the postseason and beyond begins.

Bucks Hire Doc Rivers As New Head Coach

Shams Charania of The Athletic has broken the news of the Milwaukee Bucks hiring Doc Rivers around 24 hours after firing Adrian Griffin.

Rivers served as an informal consultant on Milwaukee’s team to help Griffin; about a month later, Griffin got fired for Rivers.

The Philadelphia 76ers parted ways with Rivers after the 2023 playoffs. It was only three months of the season he was out of a coaching job.

Reportedly, Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo wanted him gone—mainly Giannis due to losing faith in Griffin. Lillard did not understand the offense he was trying to implement.
