What if the Cavs are done with Collin Sexton – does that mean Jalen Suggs is a go? The question surrounding everyone’s mind right now regarding the Cavs, Sexton, and the draft prospect. So, let’s break it all down as let’s move away for a quick moment from the NBA Playoffs and talk about the draft. Since the Draft Combine is here, the draft is July 23rd, and mock drafts will be present with us.

For the past few days we been hearing rumors upon rumors about what is going to happen to Collin Sexton; if you guys have not been paying attention to this, let me fill you in. The Cavs, speculated around the league, don’t want to give the huge contract to Collin Sexton and rather trade him to draft Suggs or someone with the third overall pick in this year’s draft.

So, this leaves us with tons of questions. Correct? For starters, would Jalen Suggs be better than Collin Sexton? What can they do with this roster if they do trade Sexton and bring in a rookie? Like Sexton, will they waist this rookie’s first few years in the league due to who they are currently? So many more questions like that, it is going to be interesting; but let us break it down.

First thing first, let’s get some background on the point guard.

Collin Sexton is a point guard and/or shooting guard, he was drafted with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Each season he has been increasing his stats, mainly his shooting percentages and PPG’s, as he had a career-high season of 24 points a game along with a 47% from the field.

With the Cavs’ roster completely in a rebuild mode, J.B. Bickerstaff as HC, they were trying to build around Sexton. The only other two players they have is Darius Garland and Kevin Love. His rookie contract is coming up and his max contract can be sign by the Cavaliers, or by any team that wants him if the Cavs just let him get traded.

What went from being their star player, a player you can build your team around. Has now gone to being tradable and not worth the money. Basically what the Cavs are saying is that they don’t have the money but value Suggs, as example, over him. But why? That is what we will be answering today.

Should the Cavs really trade Sexton? Is it a good idea?

Look, I am torn on both sides. However, I know where the Cavs are coming from if they do decide to pull the trigger and trade the guard. On one hand, they should keep Sexton because he has proven himself as an amazing passer and shooter; plus, he has shown he can grow into that team leader, that teammate that will win you games. So why trade a proven player to draft an unproven player? That is always my feelings when it comes to these types of moves teams making and/or going to make, right? Because it always seems odd especially in the case of what Cleveland is facing.

They have a bluntly bad team with an aging Kevin Love and an inexperienced Darius Garland; plus, their front and back court combined is decent. Also, let us be real. Their bench isn’t taking them the stretch when the starters need it. The first three years of Sexton’s career was ruined by this team, why? Because they were in the rebuild phase, as they still are, and they can’t get any more pieces without it hurting their cap space or just no one wants to come to Cleveland. It is not like Miami, L.A., or anywhere preferable. It is Cleveland.

So, what is on the other hand?

Maybe they are like we don’t have the money, the Sexton experiment did not work successfully, we need more time, etc. If they want to trade Sexton than most likely taking Suggs or even Evan Mobley, right? That is what is projected currently and that is what makes the most sense. Because to me, as a fan, they waisted the talented years of this player and they did not get anywhere. Besides being the laughing stock of the NBA, other than the Timberwolves.

I believe if they are going to do it big than they are going to do it big, because they aren’t going to give him up for nothing. Right? No franchise in their right mind would do that, especially for a talented player that drafted for three years ago with the eighth overall pick. For example that would be a good trade, could be feasible, would be the 76ers.

Why Philly? If you want a young, still coachable player then I would trade away Collin Sexton with a second round pick for Ben Simmons, a draft pick, and maybe Seth Curry. Here is the thing if you draft Jalen Suggs than you can move him to shooting guard, Simmons to point guard, Curry to backup SG or forward, etc. That would work because the 76ers are unsure about Simmons and the Cavs might be crazy enough to subtract out a great player for a few different players and a rookie.

Is that the route you take? I don’t know, but it is a consideration. A possibility, but whatever happens with the draft (or even prior to that) affects Collins. Unless, you let Collins finish out his fourth year in Cleveland and let his contract expire and ease Suggs into the role of starting PG. That is also a possibility, maybe just maybe that could work. Food for thought.

What’s the appeal with Jalen Suggs?

Teams, experts, and fans are all seeing it with Jalen Suggs. He is a great spot-up shooter as he is able to play off the ball, playmaking is one of his specialties, and never in a dull moment is never there for his team. His passing in general, and in transition, is something that makes teams excited to potentially have the chance of drafting him. He can be that rookie point guard that comes in and makes a splash; or be that two-way player of PG and SG. Right?

Plus, as I was mentioning before, his leadership. He is one of those players that can be consistent on the court, get his players involved when needed, have that killer instinct that people are talking about it, and different things like that. People are contesting him and Cade Cunningham to be either the first overall pick, or at the least the third pick for the Cavs.

Conclusion:

With all that being said, we know what the stakes are for both sides. We will be talking about this some more during the podcast, articles exclusively and for free, and different things like that when it gets closer. Because we could see Suggs go before the Cavs have the opportunity of drafting him, Cunningham could still be available. Heck, Evan Mobley could be an option for the team and could try to switch it up. That could be a possibility if they want to extend Sexton and get rid of Love, have a real center for the team alongside with Sexton.
