According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the San Antonio Spurs have decided to make the decision to pivot away from Kevin Durant and target a future star instead.

Their new plan is to compiled as many assets as they humanly can to go after another superstar that fits their timeline better, and doesn’t rush them into a Durant trade that may hurt their overall future of contention.

San Antonio was listed as one of Durant’s landing destinations, but they don’t feel the same way towards him as Durant feels towards them. The Spurs and the New York Knicks have both pulled out of the sweepstakes race for the 36-year-old.

The Phoenix Suns have narrowed down their talks to the Miami Heat and Houston Rockets. Originally, the Minnesota Timberwolves were included as well, but Durant has made it clear he has no intentions of playing alongside Anthony Edwards and their young core.

“From my understanding right now, the Spurs have not been the aggressive team for Kevin Durant,” Charania said on Tuesday’s Pat McAfee Show. “The Spurs have had a level of interest, I mean it’s Kevin Durant, who wouldn’t? But their timeline compared to the assets and potentially what it would take to go get Kevin Durant, they’re just not on that time that Miami may be on.”

“I think they’re going to really be stocking their assets for potentially a bigger move, a bigger player, someone who may fit their timeline,” Charania added.

Multiple times the Suns have tried to get the second overall pick and Stephon Castle back in a deal for Durant; San Antonio continues to have Castle, who has been an incredible addition to the franchise, and their highly-coveted pick off the table.

San Antonio does not want to create the same mistake Phoenix made, where they give up all their picks and young talent for an aging veteran and have no where to go when it all collapses.

The NBA Draft begins on June 25th, as many reports indicate a resolution to the Durant situation.

According to Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, the Phoenix Suns internally hope, and believe, the offensive production of Bradley Beal will noticeably increase once Kevin Durant has been traded.

Ultimately, with Beal having two years and $111 million left on his contract, Phoenix is hoping his production can finally match the output of money they are giving him.

With the constant injuries piling up and his statistical production trending downwards, not many teams have shown interest in trading for the All-Star guard. The only two teams that have shown “mild” interest in Beal was the Washington Wizards and Atlanta Hawks.

If a trade were to take place, it would need to be approved by the 31-year-old; another reason why the Suns are stuck with him.

Before hiring former Cleveland Cavaliers’ assistant coach Jordan Ott, Phoenix asked every candidate what they’ll do to maximize Beal and how to mold him into a changing lineup best fit for Devin Booker and their championship aspirations.

Through numerous reports, the Suns are committed to Booker and rebuilding the team around him. With this confirmation, Phoenix have been ramping up their trade conversations with multiple teams to find a new home for Durant. They could do it before, or on, Draft night.

The frontrunners to potentially land Durant are the Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets, and Miami Heat. All three of these teams have shown legit interest since the NBA trade deadline, or, for the Heat, since the time the Suns landed him.

Serious negotiations have manifested over the past 48 hours, which includes multiple offers. Charania reports a deal could be done in the coming days.

“There is some serious traction on conversations, on trade scenarios,” Charania said on the Pat McAfee Show. “They’ve had about six to eight teams reach out. There’s been interest. There’s been some offers. There’s been some negotiation.”

Many reports have said a trade could be done before June 25th’s NBA draft.
