According to Marc Stein, the Dallas Mavericks have declined the New York Knicks formal request to speak to their head coach about their open position in New York.

Dallas wants to retain Jason Kidd for the upcoming season, so that a brilliant coach can develop Cooper Flagg and gel together the rest of team for a potential postseason run.

Over the past couple of days, New York’s front office compiled a list of head coaches they wanted to speak with, and Kidd’s name was top on the list. Other names were along the lines of Ime Udoka and Chris Finch.

Like the Mavericks, the Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves shot down their attempt to talk to their head coach. It is unclear what direction New York will trend in after getting denied.

They will most likely stop sending in formal requests to other teams, and rather go in the direction of head coach free agency.

Top coaches available would be Mike Malone, Taylor Jenkins, James Borrego, and Mike Brown.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania and Jonathan Givony, the Dallas Mavericks have no intentions of working out any player, not named Cooper Flagg, ahead of the NBA draft.

The soon-to-be superstar sensation out of Duke will be the only prospect scheduled to meet with the Mavericks. Dallas has made it very clear since The Lottery of who they’ll be selecting with the first overall pick.

They’ve also made it clear that they have no desire to trade the pick or to select someone else. This draft is highly regarded as the “Cooper Flagg Sweepstakes.” Very similar to the situation back when Victor Wembanyama was entering the league.

His meeting with the team is set for June 17th, which is eight days away from the 2025 NBA Draft.

According to Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, the Dallas Mavericks have their eyes set on a solid point guard who can fill-in until Kyrie Irving is medically cleared to return from his torn ACL.

Ideally, Dallas wants the future fill-in to be complementary to Irving. This would either be playing alongside the veteran NBA champion or backing the 33-year-old up.

Even with the limited cap room they have, Dallas reportedly will entice players with playing time and having a prove-it situation with their temporary starting role. This could be geared towards veteran athletes who are picking between league minimums that want a legit shot at proving their worth.

Last season, Tyus Jones signed a veteran minimum contract with the Phoenix Suns with the hopes of landing a bigger contract in free agency.

The rumor-mill has already circulated names the Mavericks could land; Chris Paul and Malcolm Brogdon have been listed, as they’ll both be unrestricted free agents this offseason.
