The Pistons have hired former Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams as their new head coach, which places him as the highest-paid head coach in NBA history.

Williams agreed to a six-year, $72 million dollar deal that could turn into an eight-year, $100 million dollars. He could as much as $100 million due to incentives.

Detroit wanted him and aggressively pursued him as they were trying to change his mind about taking this season off. While they had an interest in Charles Lee and others, they clearly desired Monty Williams.

The main reason why the Pistons hired Monty Williams was to bring their team back from the abyss and into the light of success. As he did for Phoenix, Detroit hopes he can recreate that success and take them to the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

The Detroit Pistons are heavily pursuing former Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams and they are expected to offer him a mega deal.

Earlier in the month, Monty declined a deal from Detroit. However, they are going to offer him a contract he cannot refuse. Pistons owner Tom Gores and general manager Troy Weaver are wanting Monty to reconsider taking the season off.

Per CourtSideHeat’s sources, the Pistons could offer Monty Williams around $10 million per season. This is expected to be a long-term deal that could pay Monty very well.

While a deal is expected to be offered, Detroit will be assessing the rest of its options. However, Monty Williams will probably be their new head coach in no time. If he decides to end the guarantee he was getting from Phoenix and not take the season off.
