According to many reports, and from the man himself, Steve Kerr’s run with the Golden State Warriors is looking like it is coming to an end after twelve years of an incredible dynasty that spanned many memories and securing four championships.
Heading into the 2025-26 season, many people were speculating what his future within the Warriors would be looking like beyond this season. Kerr has hinted at leaving and opening the door for another coach to come in, as Golden State is going into their rebuilding period. Something Kerr has already endured before winning the 2022 NBA championship.
Last fall, Kerr rejected contraction extension talks, which was an early signal that he would be finishing the final year on his existing contract before calling it quits.
“I’m very comfortable just going into this season with a year left,” Kerr said last September. “I’m so aligned with (general manager Mike Dunleavy) and (CEO Joe Lacob). There’s no reason for discussion or concern. This is kind of a point in our relationship where it’s like, let’s just see how it is at the end of the year.”
Obviously, this season did not go the way anyone was hoping, or expecting, it to go. When the front office was constructing this season to be their “big push,” it was supposed to be one bolting them towards another championship run spearheaded by Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler.
However, due to injuries, this simply did not happen. Jimmy Butler missed 44 games following a torn ACL, Stephen Curry sat out 39 with injuries, and Al Horford missed 37 games as well. This forced Kerr to try out 43 different starting lineup combinations just to try to find some positive success for this organization. Plus, this season saw the Jonathan Kuminga saga come to an end and trying to do a hard pivot at the deadline for a play-in push.
A decision from the 60-year-old is expected within days. Reports say money will not be the determining factor in his choice.
“They could offer Steve $25 million a year,” one league source said, “and I doubt that alone would make a difference.”
