According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, confirmed by the Dallas Mavericks, both the organization and (now) former head coach Jason Kidd have decided to mutually part ways. This comes after Dallas have decided to clean house and rebuild their front office from the ground up.

Since firing controversial general manager Nico Harrison a couple months ago, they’ve hired Masai Ujiri as president of basketball operations this offseason with Mike Schmitz as general manager.

Ujiri wanted a blank, new canvas to help restore the Mavericks as a top team in their respective conference.

Kidd had four seasons and roughly $40 million remaining on his contract before his shocking depature from the team. Following the firing of Harrison, Kidd voiced interest in a promotion to president of basketball operations, but owner Patrick Dumont said he would not be considered for that position.

“Jason has had a meaningful impact on the Dallas Mavericks, both as a Hall of Fame player and as the head coach who helped lead this franchise back to the NBA Finals,” said Ujiri. “We are thankful for Jason’s leadership, his professionalism and his commitment to the team. In my short time here, I’ve developed an enormous amount of respect for what he has built. He will always be an important part of the Mavericks family.” 

“As we evaluate the future of our basketball program, we believe this is the right moment for a new direction for our team,” Ujiri said. “We have high expectations for this franchise and a responsibility to build a basketball organization capable of sustained championship contention. We will conduct a thorough, disciplined search for our next head coach and continue to evaluate our entire basketball operations staff to ensure we compete at the standard Mavs fans expect and deserve.” 

According to Marc Stein, the Dallas Mavericks are likely to receive trade interest from teams regarding veteran guard Kyrie Irving. This doesn’t come as a complete shock given their stance of wanting to rebuild internally and start new to build around the future of Cooper Flagg.

With Masai Ujiri and Mike Schmitz now leading the front office, they’ve decided Flagg is definitely their future and want a new head coach to develop him as well. Tuesday afternoon, fans learned from the organization that them and Jason Kidd parted ways.

Ujiri has expressed excitement seeing Irving and Flagg play together next season, so nothing internally is alarming the future of the 34-year-old regarding his relationship with Dallas.

Right now, Irving is not on the trade block. It’s not even reported that they’ll entertain these offers.

Last season, the one-time champion missed all 82 games due to the torn ACL suffered in early March of 2025.

According to Marc Stein, the Dallas Mavericks have made it clear that they want to retain Jason Kidd as their head coach as their general manager search is underway.

They are looking to find a general manager that can partner with Kidd, this has been described as a big priority. Their formal search is not expected to take place until the regular season ends on April 12th.

Ownership wants Dallas to make a decision before the NBA draft in late June.

The future of Kidd in Dallas was up in the air ever since reports got out of the New York Knicks pursuing him to be their newest head coach. Ultimately, that did not work and they pivoted to former Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown.

CEO Rick Welts has stressed the importance of building a strong support system around developing superstar Cooper Flagg. This goes all the way from the roster of players to the coach to the general manager.

“It’s the most important decision that the organization is going to make for the coming seasons,” Welts said. “We are going to take our time and get it right.”
