Grizzlies and Pelicans start us off with the first trade of the 2021 offseason!

Grizzlies and Pelicans start us off with the first trade of the 2021 offseason! With the NBA Draft only three days away, teams are eyeing up free agents they want to sign and players that are on the trade radar. Our first trade comes today between the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans.

The deal is where Memphis is shipping over Jonas Valanciunas and the 17th overall pick in exchange for Steven Adams, Eric Bledsoe, and two future first-round picks. Note, one of the two first-round picks in this year’s first-round pick. That is the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft. The second first-rounder is to come via Laker’s in 2022.

This move by the Pelicans was bent on clearing cap space for them to go out in free agency to sign some names. The Pelicans are hoping to get a point guard in free agency if Lonzo Ball decides to take his talent somewhere else; however, the Pelicans are investing their money into Josh Hart. Former Lakers player who was shipped over to New Orleans two seasons ago. Pels want to get him another contract. Does money play into the equation for this team? You be the deciding judge.

If the Pelicans were to resign Hart and not Lonzo, then they would be looking at $25 million dollars in cap space. If Lonzo and Hart left then the team would have $36 million dollars available to them. That is all very interesting when bringing it into the light.

Note, the trade will not become official till free agency begins – which is August 6th.
