According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Houston Rockets and head coach Ime Udoka have agreed to a new contract extension that will see him be paid as one of the top coaches in the league.

The 2024-25 season saw Houston secure the second seed in the Western Conference and have a good postseason run; beyond all that, the Rockets have been ecstatic with the way Udoka has been able to transform this organization.

In his first season, they were the eleventh seed (41-41). In his second season, they were the second seed (52-30). His ability to get the most out of his players has been widely praised across the NBA for quite some time now.

Before receiving the contract extension, the New York Knicks wanted to interview Udoka for their available coaching position. However, New York was turned down by Houston, as both Houston and Udoka remain committed to each other.

Ime Udoka Agrees To Become Rockets Head Coach

Multiple teams were interested in hiring the former head coach of the Boston Celtics, but Houston came out on top to get the agreement with Udoka.

The Rockets were also looking at Nick Nurse and Sam Cassell to fill the vacancy. It was reported a week ago that Ime Udoka had interest from the Raptors, Hawks, and Nets.

Houston is the first team to find their new head coach, now this franchise can focus on the draft and free agency period.

Nets warned against hiring Ime Udoka

Steve Nash got fired by Joe Tsai and the Nets, their answer to this new problem was Ime Udoka. However, there are “strong voices” urging Brooklyn to choose anyone else but Udoka. This is per Marc Stein as this is just another issue facing the Brooklyn Nets.

The other issues being Kyrie Irving (his suspension) and Kevin Durant’s rumors of demanding another trade.

Udoka is currently serving a one-year suspension from the Celtics for having an inappropriate relationship (violating their conduct policies) with a female staffer. Boston will not seek compensation for Ime Udoka’s contract termination, why? Because the organization never wanted to bring him back after the suspension.

With second thoughts looming, be prepared to see a new face in Brooklyn that isn’t Udoka. Maybe Tsai does hire him, maybe he doesn’t. However, there are strong advocates within the organization recommending against this hire.

Udoka hired as Nash fired – per the Nets

Ime Udoka is making a return to Brooklyn as Steve Nash has been fired by the team on Tuesday. It was a mutual agreement to part ways and end Nash’s first run as a NBA head coach.

Udoka is currently suspended for the entire 2022-23 season by the Celtics due to an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. However, Boston allowed the Nets to speak to Ime Udoka and hire him if they wanted to.

Per multiple reports, this can happen freely and without giving Boston something in return in exchange for the 2022 NBA Finals coach.

So Steve Nash’s coaching career could be over for now, while Ime Udoka is getting a second-chance in the NBA.
