Klay Thompson Set To Become A Free Agent
An extension for the 33-year-old is looking unlikely right now with both sides making no progress in the hopes a new deal is inked sooner rather than later.
While the Golden State Warriors and Klay Thompson want to remain loyal to each other, according to Bob Myers, this is beyond money and years.
“Well, this is why I left, first of all,” Myers said, laughing. “A lot of times people will say it’s just business, but this is not a just-business situation. This guy — there’s gonna be a statue of this player outside of Chase Center. He was instrumental in bringing four championships. He’s beloved inside the organization, the fanbase. So it’s not so simple as it’s money and years.”
Adrian Wojnarowski, when appearing on NBA Countdown, said if no deal is reached then Thompson is set to become a free agent in 2024.
“I’m told that there has been absolutely no progress on a Klay Thompson extension in Golden State, that they are both still apart on years and money, and there’s a very real possibility that Klay Thompson goes into free agency next summer without a deal.”
If Thompson does go into the summer without a deal, there is an expectation of many teams wanting his services and potentially willing to give him the deal he wants.
This conflict started even before Draymond Green got paid a huge payday by the organization, it has now intensified with the season beginning in eight days.
The four-time champion and the Warriors take on the Phoenix Suns on opening night, October 24th (7:00 PM MST).
