Draymond Green has only won Defensive Player of the Year one time in his career, which was back in 2017. Despite being 35-years-old and having Evan Mobley and Jaren Jackson Jr. in the running, he believes he has a strong chance of winning the award.
The four-time All-NBA Defensive First Team and four-time Second Team selection had an impressive showing Tuesday night against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks.
He held Giannis to 0-7 from the field, which not many players have that ability to do so. After the game, Green’s confidence was sky high and believes with Victor Wembanyama being out, this is his time to shine.
To add onto what he was saying, Green will take the next 13 games to continue to build his case and show voters why he is the man to win it all.
“Obviously, if we keep winning and close this year out strong, most definitely,” Green said. “I look around the league and don’t see many players impacting the game on the defensive end the way I do. I don’t see many players completely throwing off an entire team’s offense the way I do. One thousand percent.
“Especially with Wemby [the San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama] going down, seemed like he had it won. And now it is right there. So 1 million percent I have a case, and I will continue to build that case for these next 13 games. Tonight was a prime example of that.”
Names in the running for DPOY are Dyson Daniels, Jackson Jr., Mobley, and now Green.
