The Celtics were working overtime to acquire Kristaps Porzingis from the Wizards due to the deadline for his opt-in eligibility. To make the trade work, Porzingis has opted into his $36 million contract for the 2023-24 season.

The Grizzlies later joined the deal to send Tyus Jones to the Wizards, ultimately receiving Marcus Smart from the Celtics.

Originally, the Clippers were a part of this deal. They would have received Malcolm Brogdon, however, the team pulled out due to their concerns about his durability and frequency of injuries.

The Celtics get Kristaps Porzingis, the 25th overall pick, and a 2024 first-rounder. The Grizzlies get Marcus Smart. The Wizards get Tyus Jones, Danilo Gallinari, Mike Muscala, and the 35th overall pick.

The Grizzlies will now have the past two DPOY winners on their roster – Jaren Jackson Jr. and Marcus Smart.
