Monty Williams agree to extension with the Suns

The beloved head coach of the Phoenix Suns will be staying in The Valley a little while longer after reports came out of him extending his contract with the organization. Despite having two years left on his original five-year deal, Phoenix offered him the extension and now has James Jones and Monty Williams locked in for the foreseeable future.

While the terms of the contract, such as years, are not public, fans can rest assured that he will be here for several more years – beyond the original two years, he had left on his contract. In three years with the team, Williams has gone 149-78 for Phoenix. That includes leading the Suns to the 2021 NBA Finals.

It is also worth mentioning that every season under his guidance, the team never fell to a losing record. Impressively, Monty led his team to improve every single season. Most notably last season with the franchise record of 64 wins.

The Pistons have hired former Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams as their new head coach, which places him as the highest-paid head coach in NBA history.

Williams agreed to a six-year, $72 million dollar deal that could turn into an eight-year, $100 million dollars. He could as much as $100 million due to incentives.

Detroit wanted him and aggressively pursued him as they were trying to change his mind about taking this season off. While they had an interest in Charles Lee and others, they clearly desired Monty Williams.

The main reason why the Pistons hired Monty Williams was to bring their team back from the abyss and into the light of success. As he did for Phoenix, Detroit hopes he can recreate that success and take them to the playoffs for the first time since 2019.
